Ōpunakē Water Flushing

On Wednesday 9, 16 and 23 September from 10pm Council contractors will be flushing Ōpunakē’s water pipe (reticulation) network.

South Taranaki District Council network team leader Jaco Beeslaar says the flushing, which is part of the Council’s regular programme to clean the town’s water pipes, should only take a couple of hours.

“We flush the Town’s reticulation network because over time fine sediment accumulates in the water pipes. Flushing involves opening the main hydrants at the top of the town and flushing the water through the pipe network,” he says.

“While the flushing is being done the water may be temporarily discoloured as the flushed water runs through the town network. If this is the case, you should run your cold tap for ten minutes or until the water is clear. It will be a good idea to check your taps before doing washing to make sure the water is running clear.”

Jaco emphasises that though the water might be discoloured it is chlorinated and is safe to drink. “We test the water daily, however if you have any concerns you can simply boil your water. If discolouration continues or if you have any questions, please ring the Council toll-free on 0800 111 323.
