This garden began life as a glass roofed semi underground fernery designed by florist Lily Lovell and built with a legacy from the Hawera Star’s owner William Parkinson in 1922.
When the roof deteriorated beyond repair in the mid 1960s it was dismantled and the complex rebuilt as the blue and white, Chinese themed, Willow Pattern Garden, a feature of the Park for several decades.
Redeveloped in 2012, the oriental theme is retained in the plant collections used in and around the old structure.
Due to constant vandalism, the Chinese Garden remains under lock and key – but opens for special events and when requested.
