Strive to be a Selected Owner
Kia aro ki te rangatira motuhake
We like to reward good dog owners in South Taranaki! If you have been at a well-fenced property for at least one year with a well-behaved animal (that you have owned for at least 1 year) in an urban area you might be eligible to be granted Selected Owner Status. Selected Owners benefit through receiving a discount in annual dog registration fees.
To be eligible you must
- have lived at that property 12 months or more
- have owned the dog for 12 months or more
- the dog/s must be fully vaccinated
- the property must be fully fenced
- the dog/s must have suitable housing
- the dog/s are not classified as menacing or dangerous
- there have been no dog control issues of the past 24 months (no infringements, complaints or impounding)
Applying for Selected Owner Status
Fill out an application form and drop it off to the Hāwera Administration Building or your local LibraryPlus. A non-refundable application fee is charged for this application. An Animal Management Officer will be in touch to arrange an inspection where they will meet you at your property to:
- Meet the dog/s
- Ensure they’re being looked after – clean, happy, well fed, watered and that their vaccinations and worming are all up-to-date
- Inspect the fences
Selected Owner Policy Application Form
If accepted, your Selected Owner Policy covers you for the life time of your pet. There are a few ways it can be revoked
- Not paying your annual dog registration fees in full before 1 August each year
- Getting complaints
