Housing for the Elderly

The South Taranaki District Council provides affordable one bedroom Housing units for the elderly in communities throughout the District.
The units are suitable for tenants who are able to live independently and care for themselves and their units. Units are located in:
- Ōpunakē
- Manaia
- Hāwera
- Eltham
- Kaponga
- Pātea
- Waverley
The Council Tenancy Support Officer visits all tenants on a regular basis to check on their general well-being and provide assistance to access other social or support services, if required.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
All tenants of South Taranaki housing units for the elderly must meet the following criteria:
- Be in receipt of New Zealand Superannuation, a war pension or age-related benefit; and
- Have total assets, including cash, investments, house and other property, not exceeding $40,000 in the case of a single person and $50,000 for couples (excluding car, furniture and personal effects); and
- Have additional income below the current gross income limit for Work and Income New Zealand (WINZ) Accommodation Supplement; and
- Be able to live independently (including with assistance from external support); and
- Be able to demonstrate they are a good tenant with no history of excessive drinking of alcohol, use of recreational drugs or domestic or other violence.
Exceptions
Units which have been vacant for a period of over 12 weeks may be rented to tenants over 55 years of age and in receipt of a Supported Living Payment or Widows benefit from WINZ, provided they meet the above income and asset criteria.
