Food Scraps Bin

Line your food scraps bin with newspaper

We've received some feedback that the food scraps bins aren't always being emptied fully. We had a chat to our contractors and have together decided that newspaper (used for lining the bottom of the bin) will now be allowed.

This will help with fully emptying the bin when it is collected, as well as a less messy bin for residents.

Please don't put the following into your food scraps bin

❌ Compostable packaging ❌ Plastic bags ❌ Cling film/glad wrap
❌ Bin liners ❌ Garden waste ❌ Liquids
❌ Tea bags ❌ Vacuum cleaner dust ❌ Kitchen paper towels or serviettes

The food scrap bins have a maximum weight of 10kg to be able to be collected.

What happens once my bin is emptied?

Once collected, our District’s food scraps will be taken to a compost facility in Paeroa until our regional organics facility is operating.

Top tips for your food scraps bin

  • Lock this bin to keep the animals away
  • In summer, we appreciate your food scrap bin can get smelly. You can pop your food scraps into a container and place them in the freezer and put them into your food scraps bin on collection day before you put it out on the kerbside.
