If you’re ever not sure, you can have a look at the sticker on the side of your bin once they’re delivered. This will tell you both what day your collection is, and what Zone you are in (if you ever need to redownload the calendar). At the end of September, you’ll also be able to enter your details into a property search where it will tell you which bins are being collected each week for the next two weeks. This isn’t available yet as we didn’t want to cause any confusion before the new system was in place.
How can I find out what my collection day will be once the new service starts on 1 October 2024?
Have a look at the sticker on the side of your bin once they’re delivered.
What do you mean by Zone A and Zone B?
The simple answer is - it’s an easy way for you to know which calendar you need to adhere to, and makes it easier for us to let you know whether you are on a Red or Yellow collection week.
If you’re unsure, you can
- Check out the Collection Calendar that was provided to you (have a look in your Food Scraps bin for both your calendar and a guide to using the new service)
- You can have a look at the sticker on the side of your bin to see what zone your property is in, along with your collection day. Head online and download the corresponding calendar (or pick one up from the Council Administration Building in Hāwera or your local LibraryPlus) to make sure you’re on the right collection schedule.
- Do an online property search at the end of September to see what zone your property is in, your collection day, and what is being collected each week over the next two weeks
- Download the free Antenno App to get weekly reminders about what is being picked up each week (you’ll get a reminder sent to you the night before, directly to your cellphone)
What’s a red week or a yellow week?
Now that most of our bins are being collected fortnightly (with the exception of the food scraps bin), you will be putting your bins out on alternate weeks. On a Red Week you’ll put your food scraps bin, general waste bin and green waste (if you are opted into this service), on a Yellow Week you’ll put out your food scraps, glass crate and recycling.
We’ve named them after the big bins you’ll be putting out each fortnight to try and make it a bit easier. If you put the wrong bins out on the wrong week, they unfortunately will not be collected (with the exception of the food scraps, as this is collected weekly).
What happens to my collection on Public Holidays?
Collections continue as normal over the holidays. Please put your bins out on your usual day by 7.30am.
Questions about bin delivery
When am I going to get my new set of bins?
Our contractor has provided us with a timetable of when bins are expected to be delivered to serviced properties over the six-week period between 5 August - 13 September. Please click here to see the map where you can search your address.
We've only been given the week that they will be delivered, not the specific day, so please keep an eye out on your kerbside. Your address will be displayed on the sticker on the side of the bins. Once delivered, please bring your bins into your property and keep them somewhere safe until the new collection starts in October.
Do I use these bins straight away?
No. The new service using these bins doesn't start until Tuesday 1 October 2024. Please store them somewhere on your property until then and continue to use your current bins.
If you start using your new bins earlier, they unfortunately won't be collected.
My neighbours have received bins – but I haven’t!
Please have a look here and see when your bins were due to arrive (click here), if it’s still within this bracket, we ask that you wait until the end of the week, if it hasn’t arrived after the expected date, please let us know by calling us on 0800 111 323 and we’ll make sure that you’re all set up ready to go before 1 October.
Why do I have to store my new set of bins?
As you can imagine, the logistics of dropping off a new set of bins to nearly 9,000 properties all over our District is quite a daunting task and one that can’t be done in five minutes. Because of this, our new contractor, Waste Management NZ, has worked out a drop off plan and are getting you your new bins as close to October as possible. This does mean you will need to store your new set of bins for up to two months. We know everyone doesn’t necessarily have the space for this, but we ask you to do your best during this time. We have tried to make it as short as possible.
What is happening to my current bins? When will they be picked up?
We are still waiting to hear from EnviroNZ about when your current bins will be picked up. This won't be happening until after your last collection at the end of September, so please keep using them until then.
I pay for a green waste subscription - where's my new bin?
Residents on the green waste subscription own their own 240L green wheelie bins, so please continue to use these. If you need a replacement, please call Council on 0800 111 323 so we can organise to get another one delivered to your property, for a fee.
I already have a compost at home - do I have to accept the food scraps bin?
Yes, please keep your set of bins together. These new bins are owned by Council and belong to your particular property. If you end up moving home, the full suite of bins need to stay with the property for the new renters/owners to use. In the meantime, you could always use it for storing some emergency items, or to grow tomatoes!
The only exception to the rule is the green waste bin - if you have one of these, this stays with you (not the property).
