Mixed Recycling
Please don't put the following in your mixed recycling bin
❌ Plastics numbered 3, 4, 6 or 7 | ❌ Lids | ❌ Broken glass |
❌ Bin liners | ❌ Nappies | ❌ Wax lined paper cups |
❌ Takeaway cups | ❌ Takeaway boxes or trays | ❌ Needles or medical waste |
❌ Soft plastics (eg. bread bags, snaplock bags) |
The mixed recycling bins have a maximum weight of 70kg to be able to be collected.
What happens once my bin is emptied?
Recycling gets hand-sorted by people working at conveyor belts at our regional resource recovery facility in New Plymouth, then compressed into bales and transported to a recycling processor in the North Island where recycled material/products are turned into paper, boxes, tins, cans, containers and other plastic products. By recycling you help reduce greenhouse gas emissions, save energy, water and reduce the use of new resources.
Top tips for your mixed recycling wheelie bin
- Make sure items are left loose in your bin - do not bag them up. This interferes with the sorting of the recycling once it gets to the MRF.
- Lids need to go into the general waste wheelie bin
