Zeal partners with STDC to host The Great Skate
Youth not-for-profit organisation Zeal will roll into Hāwera next month, hosting The Great Skate Competition for local teenagers, in partnership with South Taranaki District Council.
A large number of local youth are expected to attend at the Hāwera Skatepark on Saturday 11th Feb from 11am – 3pm, where they will get the opportunity to bust out their favorite tricks in the hope of taking home the top prizes.
The competition is open to intermediate and high school aged youth, and there will be three categories – beginner, intermediate and advanced for the more seasoned and experienced skaters.
Zeal is a national youth organisation that creates communities of belonging and creativity, supporting young people to find and shape a healthy identity and to know their innate worth. The organisation, which was a finalist for Community of The Year in 2016, and provides creative youth development services in regions accross the North Island.
Regional Manager Luke Galley, is proud to lead Zeal’s work in Taranaki. “I’m so excited about this event, summer is so great for skate comps and they are so much fun whether you are just learning to skate, have a few years under your belt or are incredibly experienced! “A range of young Taranaki artists will be taking to the stage too to provide entertainment throughout the afternoon, so we are delighted to be able to provide this platform to showcase local talent too!”
Zeal will be using their mobile Trailer Stage that delivers events in partnership with high schools and community organizations. The event is free of charge – to enter go to www.zeal.nz or arrive for 9.30am on the day to register onsite.
STDC events co-ordinator Emma Vennell says the Council is excited to be working with Zeal to bring some amazing new events to our District.
“The goal with these events is to engage with our tamariki and rangatahi as much as possible,” says Emma.
