Normanby Community Meeting to Discuss Pathway and Domain

A community meeting is being held by the South Taranaki District Council (STDC) at the Normanby Community Centre on Wednesday 29 July at 5.30pm to discuss alternative routes for a pathway connecting Normanby to Hāwera and other projects for the Normanby Domain.

South Taranaki Mayor Phil Nixon says building a pathway along the rail corridor connecting Normanby to Hāwera, one of several priorities identified in the Council’s Pathways Strategy, is no closer to becoming a reality after a number of years working on the project.

“The Council has proposed two separate options for crossing the Ohangai Road/SH3 intersection, which any pathway along the rail corridor would need to traverse. But Kiwirail and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency have serious concerns around safety and are not supportive of these proposals,” he says.

“The Council has been frustrated by the lack of progress on this pathway and we need to go back to the community and discuss whether alternative routes should now be considered.”

Te Hāwera Community Board chair Wayne Bigham says the Board will also be at the meeting to ask residents about projects they would like to see developed at the Normanby Domain.

“The Board have recently funded a drinking fountain with a dog water bowl which is to be installed near the community centre, and we’re keen to talk with the community about what other things they would like to see to create a more interesting environment around the Normanby Domain.”
