This week the
South Taranaki District Council (STDC) is undertaking its three-yearly
assessment as part of the CouncilMARK™ local government excellence
programme.
The CouncilMARK™
programme is designed to give communities an independent picture of how
well their council is performing and
to support individual councils to further improve the service and value they
provide. Participating Councils’ undergo a comprehensive assessment by
independent experts measuring indicators across the four priority areas:
governance, leadership and strategy; financial decision-making and
transparency; service delivery and asset management; and communicating and
engaging with the public and business. Councils then receive an overall performance rating from an Independent
Assessment Board (IAB) and commentary on their performance.
STDC chief
executive Waid Crockett says the CouncilMARK™ programme encourages a culture of
continuous improvement and assists councils to further engage with their
communities on the issues that matter locally.
“STDC is committed to lifting and demonstrating our
performance so that the community can have confidence in what we do and how we
do it, and we will use our results to develop an action plan to work on those
areas where we can improve,” he says.
This is the second assessment for STDC which was a
foundation member of the CouncilMARK™
programme. STDC completed its inaugural assessment in October 2017 and
received a rating of BBB (click
