Waverley Water Update
This notice is to update Waverley residents on the work we’re doing and plan to do, to improve the taste/odour and discolouration issues affecting some areas of town.
We’ve appreciated your 24/7 feedback via our 0800 111 323 number as this has enabled us to identify areas of the network where the issues are coming up so we can investigate and take action. Please continue to let us know of issues by using our 0800 number so we can respond and track progress.
Since the new water treatment plant was commissioned, chlorine appears to be reacting with material accumulated on the inside of some of the pipes. This material has been left from when the supply was untreated.
To fix this we are:
Flushing pipes with water - What’s been done to date has seen improvements in most areas but unfortunately not in all. We are going to continue with the regular town-wide flushing programme on Tuesday’s from 9am -1pm and target problem areas. This flushing may cause some further water discolouration, so it’s a good idea to put some drinking water aside and delay washing until the water is running clear again (just run the cold tap for a few minutes to clear it).
Swabbing pipes - We are also planning to do some intensive pipe cleaning in some areas known as ‘’swabbing’. This procedure involves forcing a styryl foam swab through the water pipes to scour them clean. Water pressure propels the swab forward, the pipe is then flushed clean and tested for healthiness.
We will start this swabbing programme from the week of 14 September, focussing on the most affected areas. A few days before we begin, we will letter drop the affected households advising of the disruption to the water supply.
We apologise for the inconvenience many of you are or have experienced and want to reassure you the water is safe to drink and that we are putting resources into fixing the problem areas as quickly as we can.
If you have any ongoing issues or queries, please do contact us anytime on 0800 111 323.
Thankyou,
STDC Water Team
