Entries closing soon for prestigious Literary Awards
Get pen to paper - entries for the annual Lysaght-Watt Trust Ronald Hugh Morrieson Literary Awards are closing in under two weeks.
Poems, stories and research articles are already coming in thick and fast.
“This is one of the biggest events in the region’s literary calendar,” says South Taranaki District Council Outreach Librarian Katherine Bosworth. “And we’re so pleased to see an increase in the number of entries we’ve received so far, which is very exciting considering the calibre of this year’s prestigious judges.”
This year’s competition (comprising Short Story, Poetry and True Story sections) sees Taranaki-based writer Daivd Hill judging the Short Story category, nationally renowned poet, fiction writer and essayist Tracey Slaughter judging the Poetry section and Daily News Editor Matt Rilkoff returning to judge the research section.
“The workshops were booked out within a week of opening registrations – that’s unheard of!"
There are five categories in the Awards;
- Secondary School Short Story
- Secondary School Poetry
- Secondary School Research Article
- Open Section Short Story
- Open Section Poetry
Cash prizes are up for grabs, with the winner of each category winning $500 (as well as a year-long subscription to the Daily News for the winner of the Research Article category) and the opportunity to see their work published in the finalist book. The shortlist will be in Southlink and online on Thursday 3 October and winners will be announced at the Awards Ceremony at the TSB Hub on Wednesday 23 October.
“A huge thank you needs to go to our sponsors, the Lysaght-Watt Trust and Normanby Lions Club – this wouldn’t be such a fantastic competition without them,” says Katherine.
“Entrants need to get their writing in before Tuesday 20 August – not only will you be in to win cash prizes, but will have the added bonus of being read by big names in the New Zealand literature scene – David Hill and Tracey Slaughter.”
