Major Road Works SH3 Burgess Park – 16 Sept to 25 Oct
UPCOMING LANE CLOSURES – SH3 Burgess Park – 16 September to 25 October 2024
Downer crews, on behalf of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA), will be completing pavement rehabilitation works at State Highway 3 (SH3), Burgess Park between Mangorei and Kent Roads from Monday 16 September for approximately 8 weeks, weather permitting. The site is shown on the map pictured left.
The work involves rebuilding nearly 2 kilometres of road and will significantly improve its condition and safety for those that use it.
To complete the work as safely and efficiently as possible, SH3 between Mangorei and Kent Roads will be under a 24/7 single lane closure to southbound traffic from midnight to midday, and to northbound traffic from midday to midnight every day for the duration of works.
Because this road has high traffic volumes travelling northbound towards New Plymouth in the morning, and southbound away from New Plymouth in the afternoon/evenings, we're opting to switch the direction of the single lane closure at midday and midnight to accommodate those peak traffic flows and minimise disruption for commuter traffic, freight and public transport.
Due to safety requirements, and the width of the machinery required to complete the work, the road is too narrow to safely operate contraflow (two-way traffic) in the passing lane area. Stop/go traffic controls during the day are not possible here due to high traffic volumes, which would result in significant delays and an unsafe build-up of traffic queues.
Here is what you need to know:
- Work is scheduled to commence on Monday 16 September and will take approximately 8 weeks to complete (weather permitting).
- During this time, SH3 between Mangorei and Kent Roads will be CLOSED:
- To southbound traffic between midnight and midday every day.
- To northbound traffic between midday and midnight every day.
- At midnight and midday, when the closure changes direction, there may be a short delay for road users while crews switch the traffic flows.
- The closures will be clearly signposted so that road users can take alternative routes in advance of approaching the site. The alternative state highways are SH3A or SH45.
- Road users are asked to plan their journeys ahead of travel and take alternative routes where possible.
- This maintenance work is separate to the SH3 New Plymouth to Hāwera safety improvements project, for which planning of a roundabout at Mangorei Road and intersection speed zone at Junction Street is at an advanced stage, with physical works targeted to begin in spring. The project team will be in touch with an update prior to works starting.
We know this work is disruptive, but it is necessary to ensure the road continues to operate safely and efficiently. We appreciate the patience of the community and road users while this work is underway.
