Te Wiki o te Reo Māori with South Taranaki LibraryPlus
Te Wiki o te Reo Māori is being celebrated throughout our LibraryPlus this September with a variety of activities and events for all ages to join in. The theme for Te Wiki 2024 is ‘Ake ake ake – A Forever Language’. It represents the resilience, adaptability and endurance of the language.
Storyteller extraordinaire, Moira Wairama, is visiting South Taranaki Libraries to deliver five sessions at our LibraryPlus to Tamariki and their whanau. The sessions will involve bi-lingual storytelling and teaching a waiata in Māori. This is a free event.
Senior Community Outreach Librarian, Katherine Bosworth says “It’s fantastic that we can offer storytelling of this calibre to tamariki in South Taranaki. It’s all thanks to our generous sponsors, Lysaght-Watt Trust, for making it possible to bring people like Moira to our District. The sessions are going to be lots of fun, fully interactive and a great way to celebrate the Te reo language.”
Art sessions aimed at adults will be held at each of our libraries where participants will get to create a bookmark using a printing method whilst getting to learn kōwhaiwhai and whakataukī.
“We are excited to provide something just for adults this year, giving adults an opportunity to learn and talk about Te Reo Māori whilst having some fun getting creative.”
Various other activities will also be held around our LibraryPlus, including craft bags, tukutuku panels, waiata performances from local kura and so much more. There will also be a series of giveaways on the LibraryPlus facebook page during the week.
“Our Māoritanga collection and books around Te Ao Māori will be on display within our LibraryPlus centers as well as on our library catalogue. It’s amazing the items within our library collection and that it is all available for free to borrow. There will be opportunities to win some great prizes for the whole whanau. Head over to our facebook page for a chance to win!” Katherine comments.
