Tell us what you think! Hāwera to Normanby Corridor Strategy
The Council wants to find out what changes the community want to see for the area of State Highway 3 (Waihi Road) between Hāwera and Normanby (the Hāwera to Normanby Corridor).
The ‘corridor’ is the section of road from the Glover Road/Waihi Road roundabout in Hāwera to the Ketemarae Road/Waihi Road intersection in Normanby.
The South Taranaki Business Park Development is underway, and the primary access to the Business Park is via Fitzgerald Road (was Fitzgerald Lane) and Kerry Road (was Kerry Lane).
The Strategy has been created to advocate for safety improvements and speed management to allow for safe and practical access to the Business Park, but it also includes considerations for the wider corridor area.
Mayor Phil Nixon says the Hāwera to Normanby Corridor is getting busier by the day and will continue to do so in the future.
There are several speed limit changes within the 4.5km section of road and there are opportunities for safety improvements at multiple locations throughout the area. As the state highway is managed by Waka Kotahi - New Zealand Transport Agency and not Council, the Corridor Strategy is being created to inform Waka Kotahi of changes that could make this section of road safer and more efficient for all transport users.
“We need to get the traffic flow and speeds along the corridor fit for purpose for existing users, but we also need to think about the future use of the corridor. It is a fine balance of not restricting productivity but also allowing traffic to move safely and efficiently through the area,” says Mayor Nixon.
Council is consulting on the Hāwera to Normanby Corridor Strategy until Friday 28 February 2025.
