Remember When...

Do you remember wringer washing machines? The Art Union ticket? 6 o’clock closing?

If you can remember where the Regent Theatre is, then you’ll enjoy sitting in the Hāwera Assembly of God Church on Wednesday 14 April for a morning of reminiscing at our Remember When event.

“Gerard Langford is interviewing two or three of our own community members on stage in the Hāwera Assembly of God – which was of course, the former Regent Theatre. Many of us have a story or two to tell about that building too,” says Mayor Phil Nixon.

“The conversations will be lots of fun and I’ve heard there’s even a special, mystery guest coming for a surprise segment in the morning’s programme, so you’ll have to be there to find out who it is – I don’t even know – so we’ll all be curious!”

Remember When is the Council contribution to the Hāwera Genealogy Society’s annual Heritage and Family History week.

The Society is once again hosting a week-long programme of events that are free to the public between 12-16 April.

“Our programme is a ‘lite’ version this year because of the uncertainties of COVID, but we’re looking forward to a good week and an opportunity to hear and learn more of ‘our stories’,” says Jill Williams, the convenor of the Hāwera Society.

The programme features walks and talks around Hāwera as well as a mid-week trip down memory lane with a few blasts from the past.
