South Taranaki is no stranger to windy days! When the wind is gusting, it’s common to see kerbside bins blown over, with rubbish and recycling tumbling across the District in the wind.
To prevent this unintentional litter, South Taranaki District Council is now offering free bin latches for kerbside collection users.
Bin latches are specifically designed to keep bin lids closed if they blow over in high winds, but to release when bins are dumped upside-down into the rubbish truck.
“On windy days Council often receives calls about rubbish and recycling being blown around in the wind. Unfortunately, this material typically ends up as litter in our waterways. Bin latches are a simple and effective way to prevent this environmental damage as much as possible,” says Environment and Sustainability Manager Rebecca Martin.
Latch installation is simple and takes about 30 seconds per latch (check out the video below to see how easy it is).
To get your own set of two free latches (one each for your red-lidded landfill and yellow-lidded recycling kerbside wheelie bins), stop by your local LibraryPlus or the Council’s Administration Building in Hāwera.
