Ōpunakē’s Mural Takes Flight with Local Flair
South Taranaki District Council community development manager David Pentz is thrilled to announce the successful completion of a vibrant new mural on the Chorus NZ owned building on Main Street, Ōpunakē.
“This project marks a major milestone in the Council’s Ōpunakē Town Revitalisation initiative. Once a vacant and weathered former post office, the building has been transformed into a striking landmark that proudly reflects the spirit and identity of the local community,” says David. Following Chorus NZ’s work to prepare the building’s facades, the mural installation took just two weeks to complete.
Designed by renowned artist Dan Mills, the mural is a celebration of creativity, collaboration, and community pride. Known for his artworks throughout the district, Dan worked closely with art elective students from Ōpunakē High School, incorporating their ideas and draft designs into the final piece. Their input, alongside that of the Town Revitalisation team, has been central to shaping a meaningful and authentic expression of Ōpunakē’s unique character.
“With a carefully curated colour palette that aligns with the broader vision for future town projects, the mural sets a bold visual tone for Ōpunakē’s ongoing revitalisation. It not only enhances the streetscape but also offers a vibrant, welcoming presence for both residents and visitors alike,” says David.
It’s amazing what a bit of paint and a lot of heart can do. Here’s to a brighter, bolder Ōpunakē.
