Extensive rainfall causes major slips and road closures

Tangahoe Valley Road - still closed at tunnel - crew onsite, hopefully open late this afternoon
Mangamingi Saddle - opening this morning. Crew on site watering and broom silt/mud of carriage way to improve road surface

Roads remain closed:
Mangamingi Saddle - Road closed. Heavy rain overnight is expected to have bought down further slips. Crews working onsite today.
Aorere Road - Road now open - extreme care required. Crews working onsite today.
Tangahoe Valley Road - Road Closed. Major damage expected overnight from heavy rain. Crews are onsite now.
Morea Road - Road closed last night. Slip blocking road 900 metres from start. Crews onsite today.

Many slips and road closures were caused by Monday's extreme isolated rain event. Crews have inspected each of the sites (you can find the status below). If travelling in and around these areas, please take care on the roads.

Monday 19 December, 9.30pm
Following extensive and heavy rainfall today there have been slips on a number of roads including Wingrove, Tangahoe and Rawhitiroa Roads at the Mangamingi Saddle. Roading crews have been on site and have cleared Wingrove Road enough to enable 4- wheel drive access. Crews will resume tomorrow to assess damage and continue clearing roads. Council staff are continuing to monitor the situation.
