Awards and accolades

In 2017 the Park received the first of a series of accolades that recognised the quality of the Park and its standard of presentation. Reviewed for the first time by the New Zealand Gardens Trust (NZGT), an organisation under the umbrella of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, the Park was awarded a four star rating to be registered as a Garden of Regional Significance. A Year later in 2018 the Park was awarded a Green Flag Award, an internationally recognised standard of green-space quality shared with only 22 other parks across the country. Again, in late 2018, a further assessment by the NZGT led to the Park being recognised by the award of a fifth star to become a Garden of National Significance.

New Zealand Gardens Trust - Five Star rating.

Five Star gardens are highly recommended gardens for their presentation, design and plant interest throughout the year. They have a distinctive identity of their own and a character that gives them an edge. They may have special features that may appeal to those with special interests.

The New Zealand Gardens Trust is an organisation made up of people who are passionate about gardens and wish to share their amazing range of plants, along with traditional and innovative garden experiences and design.

Established as a Trust of the Royal New Zealand Institute of Horticulture in March 2004 to promote the best in New Zealand gardens and horticulture, The New Zealand Gardens Trust has set up a system to assess all gardens and provide visitors with information that truly reflects the garden experiences.

In 2016 the Park was awarded four stars by the Trust and raised to 5-stars when reassessed in 2019.

Green Flag - awarded in 2023, 2020, 2019

The Green Flag Award® isn't about how long your grass is, or how tall your flowers are. It's not about how many swings you have, or how slippery your slide is.
The Green Flag Award® is about community. A Green Flag Award® park provides a safe, well managed and welcoming space for the local community.
The Green Flag Award® is an international mark of quality. In the 2018/2019 award season we had 28 awards presented to cemeteries, parks and reserves throughout New Zealand.
